In my experience, both as a mom and as an organizer, the quality of children’s play is increased incredibly when toys are curated and limited to a reasonable quantity. Less volume also empowers little ones to care for and tidy their belongings on their own without it being too overwhelming. We can set them up for success, keep a tidier play room and have plenty of fun in the process!

Cutting back on toy volume resulted in a functional and easily accessible storage space for this family’s toys. Those most frequently used by the youngest children are on the lowest shelves while the older children’s toys are higher up matching their reach. There is a storage box of toys that can be rotated out with those shown here to encourage play and create excitement over old toys when they are brought back into rotation.

Kids’ Books

Books are something that I think all children should have easy access to. While I don’t usually have toys in kids bedrooms, unless there is no other designated play space, books are a constant fixture. Being intentional about having good quality reading material for kids of all ages is so beneficial for their development. However, don’t let books overtake your house. Try to curate them when possible based on season or holiday. Or keep some out and available and hold others back and rotate them every few weeks in the same way we do toys. Also, be sure to leave space for library books, if that is available to you. Books can also be a fun way to brighten up a space, they can be truly beautiful.
